Finding the Right Fit - For You and For Us

By: David Smyth, February 20, 2019

When it comes to finding a perfect match with a financial planning team, there are a few ways you can be reasonably sure you've found "the one." Think about what you're looking for from your financial accounts, and how you want to interact with your financial planner. How frequently do you need to meet with your team, and will everyone attend meetings, or will there be a family "quarterback" who handles most of the communications with your advisor?
We love it when prospective clients come in and ask these kinds of questions, as we know they're looking for the perfect match just as we are. Finding the right fit from both sides means a better and longer-lasting relationship - and usually means more success for the client as well. One thing we're asked from time to time is, "Who is your ideal client?" While we don't have one particular type of client family we work with, there are few different types of folks who tend to match up the best with our team.
First, there's the young couple or family with no investment assets yet, but a bright future. Maybe they've bought their first house, but they're in need of a plan to get started on the right financial path, and someone to hold them accountable to that plan as they build assets and work toward their goals.
Next, there's the family with high school and/or college age kids and lots of moving parts. They're saving, but there's not a lot of extra money. It's easy for these families to get distracted, so our team helps them set and then prioritize their goals in an easy-to-follow way.
Then we have the self-directed investor who just needs someone to look in on what they're doing from time to time and offer an expert opinion. These folks enjoy the markets (just like I do!), but aren't in the full-time business of financial planning. They want someone to catch any red flags they might not notice.
Finally, there are the families who are looking for full-fledged asset management. They are retired or very close to retiring, have grandkids, and need not only income during retirement, but want to leave a legacy for future generations.
Each of these types of clients brings unique needs and requires a different approach to financial planning, and we are happy to help each one organize their financial lives and work toward their goals. As in any good relationship, we communicate, hold each other accountable, and try to have a little fun along the way. If a family falls outside these lines, well, it's probably not going to be that perfect match we're both looking for.
If you're not yet working with us and you see yourself in one of these descriptions, now might be the time to pick up the phone and make a connection. If you are working with us and you know someone who fits one of these categories, we'd love to meet them and see if we can be their perfect fit. Your referrals are the best compliment you can give us. Happy Valentine's Day everyone!
