Planning Ahead – Getting Your Finances in Order
By: David Smyth, November 12, 2014
November is upon us and as 2014 draws to a close, we want to talk with our client families about planning ahead for 2015. At Family Financial Partners, we believe it’s always better to be proactive than reactive.
Now is the time to think about end-of-year money to-dos, including charitable gifts, ramping up retirement contributions and gathering receipts for tax purposes. It’s easier to take care of these things now rather than waiting till after the start of the year.
One very important topic I want to make sure and talk about is employee benefits. You’ve probably received your open enrollment packet by now, so give us a call and let us help you sort through it. Even if this is your busiest time of the year, we can go over the information and options for you to make sure your benefits match your family’s needs. We know for some of you, your benefits elections won’t be complicated, but for others, 2014 has been a year of changes that must be addressed.
Keep in mind that employee benefits comprise more than just your health insurance. You’ll want to review your disability insurance coverage, group and individual life insurance coverage, long-term care insurance and other coverage options to ensure that your family is protected.
Speaking of protecting yourself, have you purchased a new home, new car or new toy such as a boat or plane recently? Let’s review your property and casualty insurance to make sure you’re properly covered there as well.
Next, let’s talk about what changes are coming for you in 2015. Is someone in your family planning a wedding? Is this the year you’ll retire, or is a child or grandchild headed to school? These are all things you’ll want to be preparing and planning for. We can help you get your finances in order for all of life’s big changes.
And all of you procrastinators out there who are putting off thinking about these things – you know who you are! – maybe you need to get a jump start on your emergency fund or another goal for 2015. Come on in and see us. We’ll have a cup of coffee and chat. Even if your procrastination means you haven’t been to the office in a while, remember, we don’t judge, we just help! See you soon.
