Financial Planning

Professional Referrals

Need an attorney or CPA? Our team can help you find the perfect fit.

We’ve been talking this month about finding the perfect fit in a financial planning team to help you and your family work toward your goals. We certainly hope that our team is your match made in heaven, as we truly enjoy working with each and every one of you as you move through life’s various stages and inevitable twists and turns.

However, unlike in personal relationships, sometimes we have to recommend that our clients form relationships with other professionals as well. You’ve heard the saying that it takes a village, and we think that’s especially true when it comes to your financial life. Not only do we take a team approach to your finances within our office, we will always recommend other professionals anytime you need outside expertise.

People are sometimes surprised to hear that I don’t do my own taxes. “But Dave – aren’t you a money guy?” Yes, I am a financial planner. But I’m not a CPA or tax accountant. Our team maintains relationships with many professionals such as estate attorneys, CPAs and others. We’re experts in our field and we trust the business partners we make referrals to as experts in theirs.

From our perspective, it’s imperative for us to maintain these outside business relationships simply because that’s an extension of the trust you place in us. Just as you’re not going to recommend a financial advisor you don’t know to your friends or family, I am not going send our valued clients to anyone I don’t personally know and trust. And we always try to find the best fit not only in terms of what our clients need financially, but in terms of personality as well. That’s why we have a stable of CPAs and attorneys we work with, not just one.

Valentine’s Day is behind us now, and although the fancy dinners are over and the roses are wilting, we hope you and yours created some lasting memories as you celebrated the day of love. When it comes to the relationship you have with our team, know that we are always working behind the scenes on your behalf to continue to earn your trust, and make our relationship even stronger.

Once again, if you’re not already working with us, we’d love to sit down with you and start a relationship that will help you work toward the future you envision. And if you are a client, the best compliment you can give to our team is your referrals. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Why Behind What We Do

One thing that always follows New Year’s resolutions is the review of your stock portfolio, right? Lots of folks want to sit down and talk about not just the previous year, but take a look three or five years back. Then come the questions of “what have you done for me lately?” as folks look at their statements after the volatility of the last quarter. We know we need to be prepared to answer these questions, and we welcome them.

Finding Your Perfect Match

Make sure you find the right professional as well as personal relationships.

Seems like everyone is looking for that perfect match, especially this month, right? Whether you’ve found your soulmate, or you’re still looking, or you’ve given up, dating sites are everywhere these days. Speaking of perfect matches, when it comes to our clients, we know that, for those of you who have found us and started working with us, we probably weren’t your first love. In some cases, we weren’t the second, third, fourth or even fifth! Some of you only found us a year or two before you retired, and some didn’t walk through our doors until a year or two after you retired.

Falling in love is a wonderful feeling, and as a financial planner, it would be great if we could craft the perfect image and message that would make everyone who reads it say, “Ah ha! That’s who I want to do business with!” Unfortunately, as anyone who’s ever ventured into the wild world of online dating will tell you, that perfect dating profile is elusive if not downright impossible to find. And, nothing we could come up with would be as entertaining as some of the ads those dating sites put out there!

So, to have a little fun this month, our staff looked around and compiled a list of our favorites that we think you’ll enjoy. From the sappy Plenty of Fish to  Match.com trying to convince you a first date could actually be like this, to the real-life couples featured by Christian Mingle to my favorite, Farmers Only – then there’s the slap-stick approach taken by Zoosk, eHarmony telling you you’ll always be a bridesmaid, and of course the world of apps like Tinder, Bumble and lots more I’m sure, that I won’t even go into. Even if you’ve already found your beloved, these are good for a laugh!

In all seriousness though, one thing that works in any mutually beneficial relationship – whether personal or professional – is finding someone who will pay attention to you, listen to you, and with whom you have some things in common. This is why we take a team approach to financial planning. We know different personalities click differently with different people, so we will always work as a team on your behalf.

This month, we’re going to be exploring how you will benefit when you feel you have found that perfect match with a financial planning team and other professionals. We’ll cover topics such as what you’re hoping your money can do for you, how insurance should fit into your financial plan, how frequently you should meet with your team, and how your financial planner will interact with other professionals in your life, such as attorneys and CPAs.

If you’re already working with our team, we’re glad we found each other, and we hope you’ll pass our name along to others you think might be a good fit. For those of you who aren’t yet working with us, maybe February is the time to take that plunge and make a connection. First meetings are always free, and we’ll keep the coffee hot.

Ready For a Second Opinion?

The vast majority of times when I do look at a prospective client’s portfolio, I typically see some things that didn’t happen, and some things that did happen, that I’d recommend changing up. Some of the symptoms I like to address when asked for a second opinion are as follows:

Three Things to Consider Before the Year Ends

Believe it or not, Christmas is 12 days away – you all know the song, sing with me! Actually, I did a little research lately, and found that the 12 days of Christmas start on December 25 and run through January 5. But, I wanted to give everyone the head’s up that our office will be running at full capacity until December 21. We’ll be closed for regular business on the 24th & 25th, with a skeleton crew running things from the 26th until January 7, when we’ll resume full functionality and all Christmas and New Year’s festivities are over. So, if anything I mention in this newsletter creates the need for you to contact us, please do so in the next 10 days so we can take care of you.

End of Year Money Moves – For You and Us

December is here and means wrapping up your financial year as well as wrapping all those gifts. (You didn’t bust your budget, did you? No, neither did I….)

Check In With Your Financial Planning Checklist

It’s that time of year when we’re all hoping to end up on Santa’s nice list – or trying to get our kids onto Santa’s nice list – but Old St. Nick’s isn’t the only list we hope you’re paying attention to. For those of you who are clients with us, think back to those early meetings we held with you. Remember that paper we gave you with little boxes next to some words, and “planning checklist” at the top?

Efficiency in Thoughts and Finances

Have you ever watched the TV show Mad Men? Do you remember the episode where Don and his colleagues are discussing what they want in life? They all answer with something that has to do with their careers. Don gets to thinking, and later in the episode, he asks his daughter what she wants to do in life. She replies that she isn’t quite sure. Don then tells her that if she’s lucky enough to think about it, she’d better write it down so she doesn’t forget when she’s older.

Make a Commitment, Not a Decision

Life is full of decisions. From deciding what to wear when we get dressed every day to what time to set the alarm for when we we go to bed, every day is full of choices. Some decisions are small with little bearing on life as a whole, and some are large with lasting effects. Sometimes, these decisions can haunt you for months or even years. You may wreck yourself on what is the right decision, the what ifs, and then worry in hindsight about what could have been. Finally, you picked a restaurant to eat at, and now you’re wondering if sushi really would have been better than burgers.

Experience Value vs. Actual Value

A couple of years ago when my older son, Carter, was about 5, we went to Sesame Street Live! with a couple of other families. Carter had saved some money in his piggy bank and wanted to take some with him for candy. So, we got out some change and exchanged it for paper money. At the show, Carter was sitting with two girls about his same age when he spotted cotton candy vendor. My son flagged him down, and when the vendor got there, Carter announced, “Don’t worry girls, I got this!” At which point he paid $16 for about 4 cents worth of sugar and air.
