Market Update: Riding the Roller-coaster of market ups & downs
Welcome back to the 2018 stock market roller coaster ride! Between the twists and turns and the extreme moves higher and gut-wrenching drops, this market is anything but boring.

Folks, I am super pumped for 2018 to finally be here! During the Christmas and New Year holidays, I was able to take some much-needed time off and celebrate Christmas with my kiddos, while actually putting an “out of office” notice on my email. I tossed my cell phone in a box, stayed away from social media, didn’t check office or personal email, and actually managed to lose track of what the Kardashians are up to for a full seven days!
When it comes to October and the stock markets, well, this can be a spooky month for investors. We’ll be observing the 20th anniversary of Black Monday in a couple of weeks on October 19, as well as Black Thursday, which took place on October 24, 1929, and set things in motion for the Great Crash of Black Tuesday, on October 29, 1929.
We’re at that time of year where our team has seen most of you at least a couple of times, and outside of any major changes happening in your life right now, we have a pretty good idea of whether or not you’re on track with your financial plan for 2017. Of course, if there are new major changes going on in your life, please, let us know.
At a conference our team attended this week in Cleveland, I overheard several conversations about the current state of the financial markets, and what folks are thinking is going to happen in the coming weeks and months. People look back at the crash of 2000, the crash of 2008, and then at the current rally and think we’re inevitably due for another crash.
Whether stocks or teams, it’s best not to put all your eggs in one basket.
With at least 13 million brackets submitted through ESPN alone and Las Vegas bookies expecting between $200 and $225 million wagered just in the state of Nevada during this year’s NCAA tournament, well, the madness is in full swing!
Welcome to another edition of Financial Planning Madness, where instead of just talking about boring financial topics, we’ll (hopefully!) help you pick a few bracket busters as you fill out your NCAA tournament brackets.
Everywhere you look these days it’s March Madness. First, there was the announcement that Warren Buffet is finally buying a purely tech company in Apple (Aapl). He drew a comparison between iTunes and the Gillette razor blade – each is the repeatable purchase for its respective company. Proctor & Gamble doesn’t make its money from razors – it makes money from the blades. Same thing goes for Apple and iTunes, right?
It seems like everyone is confused these days. Each client and prospect we talk to is backing a different camp, and many have expressed their outlook not just on what will happen in November, but in June as well. And no, I’m not talking about politics. I’m talking about our stock market.
Well, here we are in December, and like it or not, there’s been very little change for 2015, despite the volatility in the markets that reminded us all of the 1990s! Even though what we do as financial planners encompasses much more than investing, managing investments is one pillar of our business. This year’s ups and downs have led me to ingest large quantities of Tums, and I’ve had to explain and re-explain our overall strategy to many of you due to the market volatility we’ve faced. Quite honestly, I’m tired!
