Professional Referrals

Need an attorney or CPA? Our team can help you find the perfect fit.

We’ve been talking this month about finding the perfect fit in a financial planning team to help you and your family work toward your goals. We certainly hope that our team is your match made in heaven, as we truly enjoy working with each and every one of you as you move through life’s various stages and inevitable twists and turns.

However, unlike in personal relationships, sometimes we have to recommend that our clients form relationships with other professionals as well. You’ve heard the saying that it takes a village, and we think that’s especially true when it comes to your financial life. Not only do we take a team approach to your finances within our office, we will always recommend other professionals anytime you need outside expertise.

People are sometimes surprised to hear that I don’t do my own taxes. “But Dave – aren’t you a money guy?” Yes, I am a financial planner. But I’m not a CPA or tax accountant. Our team maintains relationships with many professionals such as estate attorneys, CPAs and others. We’re experts in our field and we trust the business partners we make referrals to as experts in theirs.

From our perspective, it’s imperative for us to maintain these outside business relationships simply because that’s an extension of the trust you place in us. Just as you’re not going to recommend a financial advisor you don’t know to your friends or family, I am not going send our valued clients to anyone I don’t personally know and trust. And we always try to find the best fit not only in terms of what our clients need financially, but in terms of personality as well. That’s why we have a stable of CPAs and attorneys we work with, not just one.

Valentine’s Day is behind us now, and although the fancy dinners are over and the roses are wilting, we hope you and yours created some lasting memories as you celebrated the day of love. When it comes to the relationship you have with our team, know that we are always working behind the scenes on your behalf to continue to earn your trust, and make our relationship even stronger.

Once again, if you’re not already working with us, we’d love to sit down with you and start a relationship that will help you work toward the future you envision. And if you are a client, the best compliment you can give to our team is your referrals. We look forward to hearing from you!

The Why Behind What We Do

One thing that always follows New Year’s resolutions is the review of your stock portfolio, right? Lots of folks want to sit down and talk about not just the previous year, but take a look three or five years back. Then come the questions of “what have you done for me lately?” as folks look at their statements after the volatility of the last quarter. We know we need to be prepared to answer these questions, and we welcome them.

Finding Your Perfect Match

Make sure you find the right professional as well as personal relationships.

Seems like everyone is looking for that perfect match, especially this month, right? Whether you’ve found your soulmate, or you’re still looking, or you’ve given up, dating sites are everywhere these days. Speaking of perfect matches, when it comes to our clients, we know that, for those of you who have found us and started working with us, we probably weren’t your first love. In some cases, we weren’t the second, third, fourth or even fifth! Some of you only found us a year or two before you retired, and some didn’t walk through our doors until a year or two after you retired.

Falling in love is a wonderful feeling, and as a financial planner, it would be great if we could craft the perfect image and message that would make everyone who reads it say, “Ah ha! That’s who I want to do business with!” Unfortunately, as anyone who’s ever ventured into the wild world of online dating will tell you, that perfect dating profile is elusive if not downright impossible to find. And, nothing we could come up with would be as entertaining as some of the ads those dating sites put out there!

So, to have a little fun this month, our staff looked around and compiled a list of our favorites that we think you’ll enjoy. From the sappy Plenty of Fish to  Match.com trying to convince you a first date could actually be like this, to the real-life couples featured by Christian Mingle to my favorite, Farmers Only – then there’s the slap-stick approach taken by Zoosk, eHarmony telling you you’ll always be a bridesmaid, and of course the world of apps like Tinder, Bumble and lots more I’m sure, that I won’t even go into. Even if you’ve already found your beloved, these are good for a laugh!

In all seriousness though, one thing that works in any mutually beneficial relationship – whether personal or professional – is finding someone who will pay attention to you, listen to you, and with whom you have some things in common. This is why we take a team approach to financial planning. We know different personalities click differently with different people, so we will always work as a team on your behalf.

This month, we’re going to be exploring how you will benefit when you feel you have found that perfect match with a financial planning team and other professionals. We’ll cover topics such as what you’re hoping your money can do for you, how insurance should fit into your financial plan, how frequently you should meet with your team, and how your financial planner will interact with other professionals in your life, such as attorneys and CPAs.

If you’re already working with our team, we’re glad we found each other, and we hope you’ll pass our name along to others you think might be a good fit. For those of you who aren’t yet working with us, maybe February is the time to take that plunge and make a connection. First meetings are always free, and we’ll keep the coffee hot.

Market Update

We’re a month into 2019. Here’s our take.

2019 year calendar. January calendar on a white background. 3d RenderingWell folks, the first month of 2019 is in the books, and we’re already dealing with all those winter ailments. Fayette County schools even closed last week for sanitizing, as so many kids were home sick with various symptoms. These bugs have not discriminated against anyone, as children and adults alike have fallen victim. Many in our office have been hit, including yours truly! But, I think we’re all on the mend.

This sickness has all of us a little ahead on our New Year weight loss plans too! So, despite Girl Scout Thin Mint season coming up, please, don’t bring any more treats into the office until next Christmas! So many of our clients are amazing cooks and bakers, but we really are trying to be healthy.

Now, back to financial news. So far this year, the markets have surprised us in showing some resilience, as the Dow has bounced back up from where we ended last year. By now I know you’ve gotten your 2018 statements, but keep in mind that they don’t reflect where things are now. Many of your balances are probably significantly higher than they were on December 31, and I think we can all agree that’s a good thing.

This is also the start of the S&P 500 earnings reports, and so far, the majority are beating their earnings estimates. In general, we’re not hearing companies talk about a significantly weakening economy. Yes, we have seen some seasonal slowness in the auto and housing industries, and are having some backlog in the semiconductor sector, sure. But people are still using Proctor & Gamble products, buying Starbucks coffee and going shopping. We continue to see data that the rest of the world is in the midst of a slow-down, but that’s been recurring overseas for some time. And, we don’t think that we have to slow down just because other parts of the world are. Our economy is completely different from China’s, or Germany’s.

My opinion is that we aren’t going into a full-blown recession, and it’s nice that the markets have bounced back, but I don’t think the recent volatility is all we’ll see. I believe that a lot of the recent market activity is due to computer trading and artificial intelligence, and that is something the regulators need to address, just as the NFL needs to address what happened to the Saints! Will they? Well, in a perfect world, they would…

Ready For a Second Opinion?

The vast majority of times when I do look at a prospective client’s portfolio, I typically see some things that didn’t happen, and some things that did happen, that I’d recommend changing up. Some of the symptoms I like to address when asked for a second opinion are as follows:

The Emotional Realities of Retiring

This month, we’ll be talking about the emotional realities of preparing for and being in retirement. While we could keep this short and sweet and simply tell you to save enough and then spend a certain fraction each year after you retire, well, we all know there’s more to it than that.

Three Things to Consider Before the Year Ends

Believe it or not, Christmas is 12 days away – you all know the song, sing with me! Actually, I did a little research lately, and found that the 12 days of Christmas start on December 25 and run through January 5. But, I wanted to give everyone the head’s up that our office will be running at full capacity until December 21. We’ll be closed for regular business on the 24th & 25th, with a skeleton crew running things from the 26th until January 7, when we’ll resume full functionality and all Christmas and New Year’s festivities are over. So, if anything I mention in this newsletter creates the need for you to contact us, please do so in the next 10 days so we can take care of you.

End of Year Money Moves – For You and Us

December is here and means wrapping up your financial year as well as wrapping all those gifts. (You didn’t bust your budget, did you? No, neither did I….)

Check In With Your Financial Planning Checklist

It’s that time of year when we’re all hoping to end up on Santa’s nice list – or trying to get our kids onto Santa’s nice list – but Old St. Nick’s isn’t the only list we hope you’re paying attention to. For those of you who are clients with us, think back to those early meetings we held with you. Remember that paper we gave you with little boxes next to some words, and “planning checklist” at the top?

Healthy for the Holidays

A week from today, most of us will be gathered with family, friends and loved ones, enjoying whatever our respective traditional Thanksgiving feast looks like. Whether that’s turkey, ham, spaghetti (yes, some folks go rogue) or vegan lentil loaf, the day will probably include a bit of indulgence. And that’s okay. Most experts seem to agree that occasional indulgence is a good thing, and can help keep you on track with your healthy eating in the long run.
